How To Set Intentions in 10 Steps

How To Set Intentions in 9 Steps

Hello Beautiful Souls! Have you heard about intention setting? Do want to understand how to set intentions so you can manifest your goals faster?

If yes, this beginner’s guide is the you! I’ll be covering how to set intentions, how to declare intentions, and how to develop an intention setting ritual. I’ll also answer some frequently asked questions.

Before intention setting, I was using visualizing and journaling to manifest my goals. Truth was, I wasn’t getting fast results. However, when I started practicing intention setting and reciting affirmations, things began to not only manifest faster, but I would receive clear signs and symbols about what steps to take.

The process I’m going to show you today helped me design my life on my terms and allowed me to start helping you too!

Let’s dive right in!

What is Intention Setting?

Intention setting is the act of reminding yourself what you intend to accomplish through your actions. Setting intentions means committing to who you desire to become now and in the future.

You can set intentions for different areas of your life. For example, if you are currently attempting to be consistent, your intention might be: Today I intend to do my best to achieve my goals.

When you don’t set intentions, you are letting life (the day, week, or month) just happen to you.  By setting intentions, you are actively manifesting the things you intend to attract and receive into your life.

Now that you understand what intention setting is, it’s time to learn how to set them.

How To Set Intentions (Step-By-Step Guide)

1. Clear Your Mind and Become Present

First, before you start intention setting, it’s essential to clear your mind and become present.

Our mind is usually caught up in thoughts, emotions, and memories. Meditation is the best tool that we have to quiet the mind.

It gives you a sense of disconnection from all the distractions, allowing you to be truly conscious in the now. This is the mentality you want to be in when you begin intention setting.

Here’s how to clear your mind:

  1. Sit up straight in a comfortable position, and relax your shoulders and muscles.
  2. Take a deep breath in through your nose while counting “one, two, three, four”.
  3. Hold your breath while counting “one, two, three, four”.
  4. Take a slow deep breath out through your month while counting “one, two, three, four”.
  5. Now close your eye and continue breathing this way until you feel relaxed.

If you need help with becoming more present, I highly recommend reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It teaches you how to live fully in the present.

Now that your mind is clear, let’s focus on gratitude.

2. Write Down Everything You Are Grateful For

Next, you want to write down all the things you are happy with currently in your life.

Thankfulness is an important part of the intention-setting process because if you’re lacking in gratitude in your life, you put your mind in a state of constant scarcity. Scarcity is the mindset where you believe there is not enough, so you keep attracting less than you need.

I recommend you grab a journal and start writing what you’re grateful for this moment.

There’s no wrong way to do gratitude journaling, but here are some general instructions as you get started.

  • Write at least five things you’re thankful for.
  • Be specific. For example, “I’m grateful that my best friend took me to brunch for my birthday.”
  • Focus on people versus things.
  • Feel the emotions while writing them down.

One of my favorite gratitude journals is The Five Minute Journal: A Happier You in 5 Minutes a Day by the Intelligent Change Store. It’s a beautiful and quick guided way to start and keep a gratitude practice.

Now that you are focused and thankful, let’s start intention setting!

3. Identify What You Want and Why

Next, you have to get clear on what you want. If you aren’t sure what you want, here are some questions in three areas that you may want to ask yourself to get you started:

  1. Is your career/business fulfilling to you?
  2. How much money do you need to be happy?
  3. Are you feeling underappreciated?

  1. Are you making all the efforts possible to improve your well-being?
  2. Which healthy lifestyle change are you currently pursuing?
  3. How satisfied are you with your physical body? Your weight, skin, etc?

  1. Is your spiritual life fulfilling? Do you feel connected to the Divine Source?
  2. Are your relationships satisfying? Why or why not?
  3. If you have children, do you feel that you are doing a successful job of raising them?

Now that you know what you want, let’s choose your intentions.

4. Write Down Your Intentions

Okay, let’s write your intentions! These are the intentions that you’ll be using in your intentions ritual. More on that in a later step.

When writing, make sure you are diverse with your intention setting request. Try to set intentions in the mind, body, and spirit. Remember, it’s not just about the physical things!

Here are some examples:

  • Mind: This month, I intend to do one thing that improves my skills or knowledge.
  • Body: This month, I intend to start an exercise program that will support me in attaining my health goals.
  • Spirit: This month, I intend to start meditating 15 minutes everyday to improve my connection with Spirit.

If you are just starting, stick to one or two intentions per category every month.

Remember: Intention writing is a sacred practice. I love using a beautiful pen and journal that makes me feel good inside. My favorite journal is rose gold with bleedproof paper and a side pocket to hold my affirmation cards

Once you have your intentions written, you can start developing your intention setting ritual.

5. Choose Your Intention Setting Ritual

Before you dive into declaring your intentions, you need to choose a practice that works for you. There are so many practices you can use. The important thing is to choose one that feels right to you.

Here is an example of my intention setting ritual:

  • Monthly: One the last full moon of the month, I write my intentions down for the next month in a luxury journal, by candle light, and then take a bubble bath.
  • Weekly: I write in my gratitude journal once a week.
  • Daily: I declare my intentions first thing every morning in a mirror.

Remember, find a ritual or practice that works for you! Here are some of my favorite products for developing sacred intention-setting rituals.

Healing Crystals | Lollia Bubble Bath
Affirmation Cards | Sacred Candle | Luxury Blank Journal

P.S. If you are not quite ready to create your own ritual, and need some guided help, This Year I Will…: A 52-Week Guided Journal to Achieve Your Goals, is a simple journal ideal for beginners.

6. Declare Your Intentions

We finally made it! This is where the magic begins. It’s time to declare your intentions. You’ll want to do this daily and as early in the morning as possible

To do that, try combining it with another action. This is called habit stacking, made popular by James Clear, author of Atomic Habits. For example, state your intentions while in the shower, or while brushing your teeth, or while sipping your coffee.

Before you declare your intentions, remember steps 1 and 2: Clear your mind and state what you are grateful for.

When you verbally declare your intentions, say each of them out loud while feeling the emotion you would feel when it is manifested.

Feeling the emotion is very important! It sends powerful manifesting energy out into the Universe.

That’s it! You have officially learned how to set intentions. The next 3 steps are to help you 10x Your Intention Setting Results

7. Share Your Intentions

Sharing your intentions with others will keep you centered, help you to be extra clear on your desires, and hold you accountable to achieving your goals, regardless of your deadline.

8. Detach From The Outcome

You have to let it go! This is one of the most important parts of intention setting. Trust the process rather than trying to control every part of your day. Let whatever you want happen when it happens.

9. Practice intentions consistently

While you set your intentions monthly, you need to declare them daily. Make sure you add them to your morning routine and consistently show up for yourself and what you want.

10. Act. Take Inspired Action.

This is the magic part! It’s the part where the universe takes you on an adventure that you couldn’t have seen coming.

Your intentions will start to give you ideas, signs, symbols, and next steps. These will be as clear as a sunny day. Anything is possible!

Your role is to believe and take each action, listening to your instincts, and pursuing the journey your intentions takes you on.
