What is an affirmation?
Affirmations are powerful statements you write or say aloud that help you change your negative thoughts into positive ones. You repeat different types of affirmations daily, depending on the areas of your life that you want to improve.
When you develop a ritual of practicing affirmations consistently you begin completely transform your thoughts and manifest your dreams. This transformation then leads to you taking aligned action towards your goals.
Why should I write my own affirmations?
For many beginners, the first step to practicing affirmations is to find them pre-written on websites, like this one, and then start repeating them blindly. However, there is so much power in learning to write your own.
First, you can create affirmations that are specific to your limiting beliefs, goals, and dreams. For example, let’s say you are looking for self-love affirmations and you have a specific issue with your body image.
You can write your own affirmations that focus on your body image issues as well as helping you make healthier day-to-day choices to improve the things you don’t like.
Second, writing your own affirmations allows you to manifest exactly what you want. As humans, we are the ultimate creators and have the power to connect to the Universe individually, in our own way.
Each of us has our own unique creative forces that cannot be activated or duplicated by anything or anyone else in this existence. When you write your own affirmations and practice them daily, you are tapping into that power, allowing you to manifest faster than using pre-written affirmations.
Lastly, writing your own affirmations allows you to take control of your life versus relying on outside forces to help you change. Deep down, you know exactly what your limiting beliefs are and what’s holding you back from achieving your goals.
Taking control by setting intentions and writing your affirmations allows you to style design a life that is created for you to fulfill your purpose here on earth.
Now that you understand what affirmations are and why they are important, it’s time to learn how to write them.
How To Write Affirmations (Step-By-Step Guide)
1. Clear your mind and meditate
Before you start writing affirmations, you should meditate and clear your mind from all the distractions and stresses in your life.
I truly believe that meditation through breathwork is the fastest way to become present. Here’s how to do it:
First, you want to find a comfortable and sacred space to meditate. This could be a corner in your home that has been cleansed and blessed, a meditation pillow, and a sacred item (like meditation crystals), that you use to help you get centered.

Next, you want to take a powerful deep breath in through your nose while counting to four. Then, hold your breath for four counts. Finally, take a slow but powerful breath out through your mouth while counting to four again.
Repeat until you feel calm, centered, and fully present while focusing on your breath. If your mind wanders, just come back to your breath again.
Once you feel focused and centered, it’s time to decide what areas of your life you want to write affirmations for.
2. Decide what areas in your life you want to affirm.
When writing your affirmations you want to ensure that they actually represent what you really want out of your life.
I suggest writing affirmations that cover more than one area. To do that, ask yourself some mind, body, and spirit self-discovery questions. For example:
- How much money do you really need to be happy?
- Are you satisfied with your career/business?
- At work, do you feel unappreciated or undervalued?
- Are you currently undergoing any healthy lifestyle changes?
- What is your opinion of your physical body?
- Do you feel satisfied with your weight, skin, etc?
- Are you putting all your effort into improving your well-being?
- Are the relationships in your life satisfying? Why or why not?
- Are you spiritually fulfilled?
- Do you feel connected to God or the Universe?
Now that you know what you want, let’s learn how to write affirmations.
3. Start your affirmations with “I.”
Grab your favorite journal and pen and get ready to write your affirmations.
The first word you should write is “I”. Affirmations are all about YOU and YOUR life and what YOU want. This is the time to be selfish and focus on your needs and desires.
Because we are tapping into your personal power, the word “I” is the most important part of writing affirmations. This allows you to attach yourself to the affirmation and increase your belief in each statement.
4. Write as if it has already happened.
This is very important! Affirmations are really another form of manifesting the life you want. To do that, you must speak in the present tense.
You wouldn’t say “I will,” you would say “I am” or “I feel.” You wouldn’t say “I want” or “I need,” you would say “I have.”
Even if what you desire is in the future, you still need to write in the present tense.
5. Add adjectives to evoke positive emotions.
When you read your affirmations every morning, they shouldn’t be boring and stale. They should be unique to what you really want and full of energy and excitement! To do that, add some fun adjectives to your affirmations.
Instead of saying “I reach my career goals.” you would say “I boldly conquer every career goal and am living a life of passionate abundance!”
Doesn’t “boldly conquer” sound so much more empowering and thrilling than “reach?”
The goal of positive affirmations isn’t just to say things and force yourself to believe them. The real goal is to activate your imagination and your emotions. Those are the two most powerful forces in the Universe. Those two things have created everything around you, including YOU.
Remember, your brain is just a machine, and it does not know the difference between the past and future, nor what is real or fake. Triggering visualizations and emotions every morning allow you to create the reality you want.
6. Write in a positive tone that supports healthy thinking.
Notice that all the affirmation examples so far are full of positive energy and self-love. This is for a reason.
Affirmations shouldn’t make you feel less than. Nor should they trigger thoughts of perfectionism, guilt, or judgment.
Each affirmation should be written in a positive and loving tone. They should encourage and inspire you to do better and be better in a healthy and holistic way.
Instead of saying, “I work hard to achieve my goals,” say “I am free from procrastination and I am following a fun and healthy schedule to make progress towards the goals I love.”
7. Trick your brain by making your affirmations believable
Emile Coue, The Father of Affirmations, encouraged his patients to repeat the words, ‘Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better’.
His patients had incredible results, but only if they believed what they were saying.
That’s the hardest part for many people getting started with affirmations. You have to believe them. If you don’t they won’t work.
Your brain may not know the difference between reality and imagination… but it isn’t stupid either.
For example, if you are a writer and one of your affirmations is “I am a billionaire author with 5 best selling books,” your brain and your higher consciousness will both know that is not true.
Instead, you would say, “I effortlessly attract abundance and my wealth is growing daily. My writing brings value to others and I am paid extraordinarily well to do what I love.”
